Trendspotting 101

‘Read! In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who Created-‘

(Surah Al Alaq, verse 1, the first Revelation)

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, my dear brothers and sisters.

About 1o years ago, I once read an article about Faith Popcorn, a famous trendspotter, who travels the world, spotting up and coming trends for major corporations.

One of the trends she spoke about was the rise of service-based businesses, the kind where they offer something extra compared to their competition, like a dry cleaners’ that delivers your clothes to your home or office, saving you a trip to pick them up.

Well, recently, I noticed that a dry cleaners in Ampang Point had expanded their shop premises, taking over the lot next to them and they offer delivery services! I guess that was one trendspotting that came true…

It’s these kind of businesses that have a higher probability of success in the long run because they managed to capture a very lucrative market; people who don’t want to waste time running time-consuming errands and would be willing to pay for services that help them not have to do these errands.

Shopping for groceries? Aunty Helen’s shop in Ampang Jaya and Hock Choon supermarket on Jalan Ampang will take your shopping order, pack them up and deliver, right to your doorstep. Your car is dirty but don’t have the time to send it for washing? Just look out for one of those guys on a bicycle going around car parks, washing cars while you’re at work in the office. (Even these guys had caught on!)

I implemented this principle in my training business, offering my clients very specific, custom-made training programs that meet their training needs and objectives. I don’t believe any two training programs that I’ve run is the same as the other (which sometimes can be very frustrating for me when I don’t remember what I did in that program to achieve that specific shift in behavior or mindset…Got to start taping myself!)

Trendspotting can be very profitable if you know what to look out for. I’ve begun to see a shift from a materialistic lifestyle to a more spiritual, family-orientated lifestyle. Just look at the number of family members going on a family holiday together- sometimes in the dozens. Look at Stephen Covey- from 7 Habits, he added the 8th Habit which focused on spiritual well-being.

By taking the time to be aware of the world around us, it will actually give us a head start in our life or our business, seeing where the next trend will shift to. Don’t focus on where the ball is but focus on where the ball is going. Allah knows best.

I read in Facebook Memology: Top Status Trends of 2009, ‘family’ is ranked number 5 in the trends list. Family-related words increased with perhaps the most dramatic increase was “kids,” a word whose occurrence went up by a factor of five.
