‘Read! In name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who Created-‘
(Surah Al Alaq, verse 1, the first Revelation)
Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, my dear brothers and sisters.
Earlier in the week, the boys and I went to have a look at the stevia plants being grown on a piece of land my mum gave me in Hulu Langat, Selangor.
My parents started the stevia farm early this year after learning how beneficial it is. The stevia leaves can be converted into high quality, healthier sugar. One tablespoon of stevia is equivalent to one cup of processed white sugar. I tried a few grains the other day and Masha’Allah, I still tasted the sweetness more than an hour later. Adam said those few granules of stevia made him feel full (I asked my mum and she said it does help with digestion, as well).
From what my mother explained to me, stevia is fast becoming the healthier alternative to processed white sugar and that some major corporations have begun to use them in their diet sodas. Previously, it was reported that stevia is very difficult to grow except under specific conditions but my father wanted to experiment growing it here in Malaysia.
Alhamdulillah, my parents’ efforts have paid off and now the farm is receiving a lot of interest from corporations and the Agriculture Department. Yesterday, the farm received a visit from the director of an agriculture department who was so impressed, he has asked my father to set up training on how to grow stevia and recommended my parents’ stevia farm be recognised as the centre of experimental stevia farming in Malaysia.
I told my mum what great news this is. How this is an indication that more beneficial options for mankind are being readily made accessible for everyone. Something that is new and good can make a big difference toward improving the quality of our lives and every effort should be made to help spread it so more people (especially the poor) can benefit from it. May Allah make successful my parents’ stevia farm and grant them the courage and strength to share their work with others. Ameen.
